The VR500 is a small communications receiver that looks like a walkie-talkie. It covers a surprisingly wide range of frequencies. According to a Universal Radio Inc. advertisement (published in 2000), this unit receives 0.1-1,300 MHz, except for cell phone bands. It can receive in a variety of modes, including SSB. To operate, it only requires 2 "AA" batteries. A receiver like this can be used to tune an immense range of broadcasts and communications; aircraft, police, CB, Ham, marine, weather, international news, and so on. It covers more bands than most large tabletop units. If this Yaesu is too costly, consider the older Sony ICF-PRO70 (0.15-108MHz) or the inexpensive Emerson Radio Patrol 2002 (CB and some VHF).
