12/19/07: Review of Word 2007 vs. 2002

How does the new Microsoft Word 2007 (based upon using the 60-day trial version) compare with Word 2002? Read on to learn about which characteristics of each version are preferable to the other...

Word 2007: The more recent version offers some new features which are useful, including an automatically-updated word counter in the lower left-hand corner, SmartArt (enables some types of graphics to be easily created), and a different menu system. However, it will take some time for users of older versions to become accustomed to, and it cannot be operated in Windows 98 or 2000.

Word 2002: This version of Microsoft Word runs more quickly than 2007 in most ways. It system requirements are much lower; 2002 requires about half as much memory, and has a substantially lower minimum processor speed. The interface is less cumbersome; it also works much better at low display resolutions than 2007 does.

Overall, it is probably better to remain with 2002 or an older version if you are already skilled at using the previous interface. It is also preferable if your computer is more than a few years old or it has a small monitor. 2007 might be best if you don't have much previous experience using Microsoft Word or want to take advantage of new features it offers.
