02/04/08: "In Debt We Trust" Review

The documentary In Debt We Trust is about the important problem of debts held by American individuals and the federal government. It covers such issues as credit cards, payday loans, mortgages, student loans, corporate influence upon Congress, and the national debt.

This movie reveals techniques used by the major banks to maximize the cost to borrowers, while portraying themselves in a positive light. It emphasizes the massive interest costs of payday loans and credit cards, especially when not repaid by the end of the month. The documentary shows how credit card companies and their lobbyists use campaign contributions to pressure most members of the Congress and Senate into creating policies which are favorable to them, such as tightening the bankruptcy laws which apply to individuals. It includes footage of Sheila Jackson-Lee and Ted Kennedy, two of the few politicians to speak out against these practices.

Overall, it is an interesting documentary which covers facets of this issue that go largely ignored in the media. In Debt We Trust can be rented on DVD from NetFlix or purchased on eBay.com. The current U.S. national debt statistic can be found at LessWaiting.com News.
