The Wards Airline model 1240 is a transistor-based shortwave radio of moderate size. Its front panel sports a built-in speaker (with metal cover), a tuning scale, a strip of woodgrain, and some switches. There are also some small "windows" (more common on old pocket radios) that show the current band and other selections.
The Montgomery Ward Airline 1240 has several knobs on the side and a flexible handle on the top. Its MB, SW1, and SW2 bands encompass most shortwave frequencies; it also covers AM and FM. The combined frequency ranges include 0.54-22 MHz and 88-108 MHz. Marine, broadcast, and amateur portions are marked on the tuning scale.
Lifting the back panel of the Wards Airline 1240 radio reveals a battery compartment and a socket for connecting an AC adapter. A label next to the socket indicates the required specifications of an adapter to be used with this unit. Unlike most SW radios of this era, it doesn't have a built-in AC power cord.
