To convert a USB (Universal Serial Bus) jack to a 25-pin (DB25) serial port, you need a special type of USB to serial adapter. It creates a 25-pin male port, like some older computers have. The adapter requires a free USB port and a compatible operating system.
Cable Length
Such adapters usually have a cable between the USB plug and the 25-pin serial port. The length varies; the Cables To Go model 22429 features a six-foot cable, whereas the model ICUSB232DB25 manufactured by StarTech has a shorter three-foot cable.
Data Speed
The adapter's range of data transfer speeds can also vary. The Cables To Go 22429 operates at 1,200 to 115,600 BPS (Bits Per Second). StarTech's equivalent communicates at up to 250,000 BPS. However, the higher speed cable requires USB 2.0, which some older PCs lack.
Connection
A few USB to 25-pin serial port adapters have a built-in DB25 port (like the 22429), while several other models have a nine-pin port and come with a nine to 25-pin adapter. An advantage to models which use a second adapter is that they also work with nine-pin devices.
