The 2500 XL is a desktop PC-compatible from the early 1990s. It was typically used with the MS-DOS operating system and the Tandy DeskMate graphical user interface. It is also capable of running GEM or an early version of Windows. This 286 computer first appeared in the 1991 Radio Shack catalog. It was priced at $1499 USD, including some software, a keyboard, digital sound, one megabyte of memory, and a 3.5" 1.44MB floppy disk drive. It was promoted as a "business PC". More memory, a hard drive, a CD-ROM, or a modem can be added. According to the 2nd edition of "Getting the Most out of DeskMate 3", the 2500XL has built-in ports for mice and serial devices. It has DOS and a portion of DeskMate stored in ROM, allowing for faster booting. Rather than a built-in setup utility, it uses a program called SETUPXL (on a floppy or hard disk). This model has standard "AT" 16-bit ISA expansion slots, so relatively recent modems, network cards, and other upgrades can be installed. Extra drive bays are available for adding a 5.25" or (2nd) 3.5" drive to the system.
