STEREO VS MONO SOUND

Though music in stereo sounds best, audio in either stereo or mono can sound very good, with quality equipment and clear reception. Stereo sound requires at least two speakers or headphones.

Some stereos have a switch for selecting between these two types of sound. Most of the time you will want to use stereo sound, but there are a couple situations where it may be best to choose mono:

1. Audio quality is poor, due to less-than-perfect reception. The stereo indicator light might be flickering. Setting the switch to mono may improve the sound when this occurs.

2. The receiver is only connected to one speaker, a single earphone, or a set of mono headphones. Some radios only have one speaker but do offer stereophonic output through headphones.

Usually it makes no difference how this switch is set if you're listening to a mono broadcast or recording.
