Review: Sony CFS-3000 Stereo Cassette-Corder

This Sony is an older boombox with two detachable speakers and a tape recorder. It features a graphic equalizer, an AM/FM receiver, a handle, and a built-in telescopic antenna.

The CFS-3000 runs on six "D" batteries or AC power, using its two prong built-in cord. There is a 1/8" earphone jack on the front, and two speaker jacks and two microphone jacks on the back.

The Sony Cassette-Corder also has a sliding balance control on the front, an AC/DC switch on the back, and a recording-mute button. The tape deck can play, FF, rewind, pause, stop/eject, and record.

This Sony CFS-3000 boombox features an Automatic Music Sensor (AMS) function as well, for cassettes. It's not clear if it has AFC or not, but the radio reception usually doesn't seem to drift or distort.

The tape recorder didn't last as long, but the radio still works after many years. This unit offers good reception and excellent sound quality, with plenty of useful features.

NOTES: Maximum power consumption 14W, usually around 5W. Uses 3W when switched off but plugged in. Made in Japan. A service manual was published for the CFS-3000.
