Many people dismiss the idea of using solar power because large panels are so expensive. However, it's quite possible to buy a small solar panel for under $30 new, including shipping costs. You can find them on eBay.com, among other sources. These panels won't run your refrigerator, but they're a good way to save money on batteries, experiment with solar energy, and prepare for emergencies.
Even with a small 3.3x4.75" inch panel in bright sunlight, you can directly power a radio, a very small fan, a calculator, or a clock, among other things. Charging batteries is also possible; this way, you can store up power to run items like flashlights, portable CBs, and cassette players. A panel with adjustable voltage will run/charge a greater variety of batteries and devices.
During a long-term electrical outage, even a very small solar panel with a few rechargeable batteries can be enough to keep your radios and flashlights working - all you really need if you have a woodstove. Batteries charged in a conventional charger won't necessarily have enough power left when an unexpected outage occurs, and alkaline batteries may expire or corrode.
