Many devices have one type of signal strength meter or another; shortwave radios, digital TV converter boxes, satellite receivers, and so on. Although you can often judge the quality of the signal by considering audio or video quality, using a signal strength meter offers the following benefits:
- Sometimes the meter can detect differences in strength that aren't otherwise perceptible, particularly with digital broadcasts
- Such a meter can distinguish between dead air and no signal on shortwave, or between a blank screen and no reception on TV
How is this useful? Because it helps you adjust the receiving antenna or satellite for the best overall reception so that future interference will have less impact on the signal, by gaining the strongest reception possible. As for telling dead air and lost reception apart, this lets you know if you should keep listening.
