SEARS 2278 FOUR BAND RADIO

The model 2278 "4 Band Solid State 15" is a relatively large, heavy shortwave radio receiver which tunes the FM, AM (535-1605 kHz), SW1 (2-6 MHz), and SW2 (6-18 MHz) bands. It will run on four "D" batteries or AC power delivered through a detachable two prong (non-polarized) power cord. It appears to be from the 1960s or '70s.

The Sears 2278 features a heavy-duty metal handle, pushbutton AFC, a tone control, a tuning/battery indicator, a telescopic antenna, and a large built-in speaker. There is also a fine-tuning control which aids in finding AM and shortwave stations. Most of the knobs and buttons are on the top; a couple are on the front and side.

When the red "LIGHT" button is held down, two tiny lightbulbs illuminate the tuning scale and tuning/battery indicator. The exterior is mostly made of chrome, metal, and black plastic. The two sides of the Sears 2278 appear to be made of wood. The main tuning knob can be easily removed for cleaning or replacement (it just pulls off).

The tuning scale on the Sears 2278 4 Band solid-state radio is positioned vertically. On the shortwave bands, it has markings for the meter bands as well as frequencies in MHz. It covers the 120, 90, 75, 60, 49, 41, 31, 25, 19, and 16 meter bands. A long red pointer crosses the entire tuning scale.

There's also a 1/8-inch earphone jack on the back of the radio. When connected to stereo headphones, sound only comes out of one side. This jack could probably be used to connect the Sears 2278 to a larger speaker or a cassette recorder as well (which would make it possible to record shortwave programs without a shortwave cassette recorder).

Unfortunately, the Sears 2278 doesn't have jacks for connecting an external antenna or a DC adapter. Band selection (and power, AFC on/off) is accomplished using a set of old-style pushbuttons; when one is pushed, another pops up. Sears printed some specifications and other details on the bottom panel.

The entire unit weighs six pounds (2.72 kg), including the AC power cord but not any batteries. The Sears 2278 measures almost 8" tall (20.3 cm), about 11" wide (28 cm), and 3.25" thick (8.2 cm). The tuning scale spans about 3.5" (8.8 cm) and the fully-retractable telescopic antenna measures approximately 32" (81 cm) long.
