Review: Kill-A-Watt Meter Model P4400 P3

The P4400 is a wattage meter which can tell you how many watts, volts, or amps an electrical device is drawing. It also shows Hz and kWh statistics. It has an LCD screen and a beige plastic exterior. The P3 meter can be purchased new online for as little as $22 USD. Some public libraries offer these (or similar) meters.

This meter is easy to use; it is operated with just five buttons and it comes with instructions. Be careful not to cut into the instructions when opening the clear plastic package it comes in. To check the wattage of an appliance or electronic device, just plug it into the front of the Kill-A-Watt P3 and plug the meter into a wall outlet. Press the "Watt" button to see how many watts it is drawing.

The P4400 can accept two-prong or three-prong plugs and adapters, including those with polarized prongs. It requires a three-prong outlet to plug into. You can't check the power consumption of items with large 220V plugs, however. It's great for finding out how much power an appliance uses at different settings or how many watts an electronic item draws when plugged in but switched "off".

As for accuracy, this Kill-A-Watt meter appears to measure everything accurately except possibly the very low wattage levels (under three watts). For some reason, it seems unable to determine the wattage of some old radios made during the 1960s and 1970s.
