REALISTIC TRC-479 RADIO FACTS

The Realistic TRC-479 is a compact, older Citizen's Band (CB) radio. A digital display, a microphone jack, and controls for volume, channel, and squelch are positioned on the front panel. The Realistic TRC-479 was primarily designed for use in an automobile, though it could become a small base station with the right antenna and power supply.

FEATURES

This model provides full forty-channel CB coverage and a five-pin microphone connection. Other amenities include a speaker output connection, ANL (noise limiter), and dual ceramic filters, according to Radio Shack. It offers fewer features than many mobile and base CB radios but more than most handhelds.

SPECIFICATIONS

The Realistic TRC-479 transmits and receives on frequencies from 26.965 through 27.405 MHz. Unlike some CB radios, it does not receive the weather band. It also cannot communicate in SSB modes. The maximum transmitter strength is four watts and it runs on 12 to 16V negative-ground DC electrical power, according to the manufacturer.

SERVICE MANUAL

The Tandy Corporation published a 37-page Service Manual for the Realistic TRC-479. It remains available in PDF format at CBTricks.com (see the Sources section at the end of this article). The Service Manual provides full specifications, diagrams, and detailed information on how the TRC-479 works internally.

EXTERNAL ANTENNA

This CB radio uses a detachable external antenna. Manufacturer specifications indicate that the Realistic TRC-479's antenna impedance is fifty ohms. Buying a radio that includes the antenna will eliminate concerns regarding compatibility. Attempting to use a CB radio of this type without connecting the antenna can prove harmful.

VALUE (2011)

The Realistic TRC-479 frequently shows up on eBay.com, sometimes in need of repair. Defunct units hold little value, but a working TRC-479 CB recently sold for almost $19 (plus shipping). It came with a power cord, a small antenna, and a microphone. A manual and original box probably would have boosted the value over $20.
