The small, handheld Radio Shack "Weatheradio" model 12-259 receives weather information broadcasts and emergency alerts. It includes a range of extra features that even some desktop weather radios lack.
FEATURES
This radio offers a digital display, a built-in thermometer, an alarm clock, travel/home modes, and an optional alert reminder, among other features. Its sophisticated specific-area alert system simultaneously accepts up to ten location codes, according to information from Radio Shack.
The RS 12-259 "Weatheradio" receives both the detailed audio and the short text descriptions of alerts; "Coastal Flood Warning" is one example of such messages.
SPECIFICATIONS
"Weatheradio" model 12-259 covers all seven weather channels used in the United States, according to the manufacturer. The frequency range includes 162.4-162.55 MHz. It weighs just over five and a half ounces. The receiver does not cover any other radio bands, like AM or FM.

The original Owner's Manual consists of twenty-eight pages, copyright 2003. The manual provides detailed information on how to operate the "Weatheradio" 12-259 and change the alert settings. POWER SUPPLY
The Radio Shack 12-259 runs on three "AA" batteries or an external adapter, according to the Owner's Manual. The adapter must supply six volts of DC power at a minimum of 300 milliamps, using an "H" size connector. The 12-259's display includes a battery strength indicator.
RESALE VALUE
Galt Technology indicates that Radio Shack priced the 12-259 at around $50 new (plus sales tax). Occasionally this receiver shows up on eBay and CraigsList for prices ranging from about $20 to $40 U.S. dollars.
