Review: Optimus 12-603A AM/FM Extended Range Receiver

DESCRIPTION: This is a moderately large AM/FM radio with a telescopic antenna, built-in AC power cord, and various features aimed at improving reception. The exterior is plastic, except for a large metal speaker cover on the front. There is a folding handle for carrying the radio.

CONTROLS: The Optimus 12-603A has small knobs for adjusting the bass, treble, and volume on the front panel. On the side, there is a large tuning knob. There are switches for AFC, band, and bandwidth on the front, a power button on the top, and an AC/DC power switch on the back. All of the controls are easy to use and clearly labeled.

RECEPTION: Using the built-in antenna, the Optimus 12-603A performs well on both the AM and FM radio bands, receiving more stations clearly than many other radios do. An external AM or FM antenna can be attached to the phillips-head screws on the back panel for even better reception. The wide tuning scale allows for precise tuning.

SOUND: The Optimus 12-603A offers high-quality sound through its large speaker and tweeter. The separate bass/treble tone controls enable the listener to obtain optimum sound quality. The earphone jack allows for connection of earphones or an external speaker. However, sound will only come out on one side if stereo headphones are used.

POWER: The portability of this receiver is reduced by its requirement of either six "D" batteries or AC power (polarized two-prong plug). According to a wattage meter, the radio consumes three watts of power at low-to-moderate volume, and four or five watts at high volume. Unlike many radios, it uses no power when off but plugged in.

OTHER NOTES: The built-in telescopic antenna rotates 360 degrees and measures about 32 inches long. The AM reception includes the extended AM radio band (1600-1710 kHz), as well as the original AM frequencies (530-1600 kHz). It came with a short instruction manual on glossy paper. This radio has performed reliably for several years of occasional use.

SUMMARY: The Optimus 12-603A Tuned RF AM-FM Extended Range Receiver is a good choice for someone who wants to hear distant or weak AM and FM radio stations with quality audio and analog tuning. It is best for home use, but can also be used portably if you don't mind buying and carrying six "D" batteries.
