New search engines continue to appear every year. Some prove unremarkable, but others have features and capabilities not offered by the major engines. Let's take a look at a few of the most notable new search engines of 2010...
1. Blekko has a fast interface and supplies quality results for both specific and general searches. One different feature of Blekko is that it lets searchers click a "spam" link next to any search result to report it as such. Another link titled "links" provides a list of links to the web page in question. Blekko also shows the IP addresses of sites and allows the use of quotes in searches.
2. Lavva offers web, image, video, news, and "all" (combined) searches. It has up-to-date (more so than Blekko), quality search results. Each listing features a "thumbnail" image, up/down vote buttons, and a Twitter link, among others. Pages open with a small Lavva frame at the bottom. The searching interface of Lavva is somewhat slow, at least on a dial-up connection.
3. NowRelevant is a search engine oriented to new, recent results. A sliding bar may be adjusted from 1-14 days (the maximum age of its listings). This lets the searcher avoid outdated information on time-sensitive subjects. It is an interesting concept, but still in "beta" stage; there are some technical issues and NowRelevant isn't compatible with as many web browsers as most engines.
All three of these new search engines offer some beneficial capabilities which could secure them a significant share of Internet searches, but only if they succeed in conducting adequate promotional efforts and making a few more improvements.
