Review: Magnavox DP100MW8B DVD Player

The Magnavox DP100MW8B is a compact, inexpensive home DVD player which will play CDs and DVDs on your television. It has a black exterior and rectangular shape. The DVD tray is on the front, so other devices can be stacked on top if necessary. It features progressive scan capability and dolby digital sound.

It is operable using a set of small buttons on the front panel, or the remote control (model NB093). The remote requires two "AA" batteries; alkalines or rechargeables will work. Power consumption of the DP100MW8B is low; 0 watts turned off, 5W idle, 6W playing a CD, and seven or eight watts while playing a DVD. Thus it uses as much power to play DVDs (not including a TV) for eight hours as a 60W light bulb consumes in one hour.

The Magnavox DP100MW8B used for this review has functioned well during the past several months since it was purchased. It plays more reliably than the Durabrand model it replaced, which often had problems with slightly dirty or scratched DVDs. It has been used successfully with a twelve-year-old television (connected with RCA A/V jacks), a 25-year-old TV (connected via an RF modulator), and a B&W portable.

Tip: If there is a lot of buzzing in the audio when using an RF modulator to attach the DP100MW8B DVD player to a television, disconnect one of the two (right/left) audio cables from the modulator.
