Tandy 5000 MC Computer System

The Tandy 5000MC is an early 386 desktop computer from the late 1980s with five IBM Micro Channel Architecture (MCA) internal expansion slots, two megabytes of memory, and VGA graphics.

The 5000MC was substantially more expensive than most of Tandy's other computers, so this model is rather difficult to find at present. Despite being about twenty years old, the 5000MC meets the system requirements for Windows 3.1/3.11, and might run Windows 95 with a memory upgrade.

Advertisements pictured the 5000 MC with a Tandy VGM-300 color monitor, but other VGA monitors should work as well. The computer has four drive bays (two 3.5" and two 5.25") for holding various data storage devices.

According to the Tandy press release announcing its introduction, it was the "most powerful personal computer" they had ever offered at the time, although they did make some computers with faster processors later on.

Apparently the 5000 MC was offered by Tandy for about two and a half years. It was listed at $4999 in the 1989 Radio Shack catalog (more for a hard drive), and the same in 1990; it did not appear in the 1991 or 1992 catalogs.

It can be upgraded to sixteen megabytes of memory, according to the manufacturer's specifications. Some microchannel expansion cards are available on eBay.com.
