MAKING YOUR COMPUTER FASTER
Spending more money often isn't really necessary to make your computer run faster; here are some tips on how to do this for free:

  • Use the Disk Defragmenter application (a.k.a. "defrag") in Windows or DOS occasionally; this will make hard drive access faster.
  • Try using an older version of your operating system; these are usually less demanding.
  • Use fast-loading web sites like CraigsList.org and LessWaiting.com; click here for some related tips.
  • Open files and programs from the hard disk rather than floppy disks or CD-ROMs as much as possible; the hard disk is faster to access.
  • Reduce the number of non-essential programs you have running in the background, if there are any.
  • Consider using a Virtual Disk for some purposes; this uses part of your computer memory to make a temporary "hard disk."
