How To Reduce Computer Eyestrain
Here are some tips on reducing the amount of eye strain being caused by your computer, if adjusting the brightness and contrast isn't enough...

  • Take breaks fairly often, avoid bright light during them.
  • Consider buying an anti-glare filter for your computer monitor; make sure it is of good quality.
  • Try adjusting the screen resolution; a lower resolution will make everything larger.
  • Make sure the monitor doesn't have too much dust on its screen.
  • Use applications and web sites with darker backgrounds, such as yellow over dark blue.
  • If the room is dark, turn a light on, especially if you are using an LCD monitor.

Another option is to increase your computer's monitor refresh rate. This may be easy, or very difficult, depending upon your video card and operating system. It is possible to damage some monitors by using a refresh rate they don't support; try to find the acceptable rates in the monitor's manual. Some older monitors only support a single rate. Computers are often set to a refresh rate which is too low (60 Hz) by default, this can cause eye strain. 75 Hz is significantly better.

Some people recommend one type of computer monitor as being much better than another for reducing eye strain, but this seems to depend upon the individual. Different people find either CRT or LCD monitors to produce less eye strain. It also may vary based upon the monitor quality and capabilities. People seem to report more eye strain caused by laptop computer screens, although not everyone does - if you only own a laptop/notebook, try connecting it to a CRT if you frequently experience eye strain.
