This is a very high-capacity IDE hard disk drive (HDD) that can hold the equivalent of about fifteen-hundred CD-ROM discs worth of data. The '08 edition of the "Secret Guide to Computers" states that the Hitachi OA34915 holds 1,000 gigabytes, has a thirty-two megabyte cache, and operates at 7,200 RPM. As of 2007, it cost about $400 U.S. dollars. One-thousand gigabytes (GB) are also known as a single "terrabyte" (TB). Another example of the capacity of the Hitachi OA34915 is about 728 thousand 3.5-inch high-density floppy disks (which each hold 1.44 megabytes). A drive this large is not really necessary for the vast majority of computer users. Keep in mind that if you were to actually fill most of it, back-ups could become rather time-consuming and/or costly. Using a 40 GB drive is sufficient for many XP users, and just 5 GB is quite adequate to install Windows 95/98 and plenty of software.
