ANYWHERE: Craigslist.org (under "apts/housing for rent" and "sublets & temporary" categories), Oodle.com (not recommended for dial-up users), local property management company web sites, and Sublet.com (sublet and roommate arrangements).
CITIES WITH OVER 20,000 PEOPLE: Apartments.com, Rent.com (requires an email address to search their listings, but offers a $100 prepaid debit card reward for successful apartment rental transactions), and ForRent.com.
NOT RECOMMENDED: Classifieds.com (very few results), FRBO.com (vacation-oriented), USFreeAds.com (few results), USNetAds.com (no apartments except in largest cities), ClassifiedsForFree.com (very few relevant ads).
Especially when using the Internet to find apartments for rent, one should remain wary of scams. Be suspicious if you are told that the building's landlord is temporarily "out of the country". Although they vary in detail, many apartment rental scams can be avoided by following these two tips...
