Dot Matrix Printer Art

While it is true that dot matrix printers are generally used only for printing plain text, making graphical artwork with them is possible as well. They even have a couple of advantages in this field, when compared to inkjet and laser printers.

The tractor-feed paper used by this type of printer makes it possible to create long banners of art and/or large text, and also gives you a larger surface to print on than typical laser or inkjet paper. Although most print in black & white, some color dot matrix printers have been manufactured.

A programming language such as QBASIC can be programmed with code to make a dot matrix printer produce customized art, or an older graphics application with drivers for dot matrix printers can be used.

If you don't have the software or appropriate operating system to do this, art can be generated by putting together letters or symbols in the form of a shape or pattern. From a distance, they will look like graphics.
