This alternative to Intel's 80486SX CPU is a lower-cost option that doesn't perform as quickly. According to the "Secret Guide to Computers" (30th edition), the Cyrix 486SLC isn't as fast as the 486SX. One web site (redhill.net.au) calls it a "486 in name only". Judging from these statements, a computer with this processor probably runs Windows 95 slowly, but is more than adequate for GeoWorks, Windows 3.1, or DeskMate. Using a disk cache in DOS or adding more memory for Windows will help compensate for a slower CPU. Notes: Used in PC-compatibles. Faster than any 286, slower than any Pentium.
