Cougar H116 20 Band World Receiver Review

This is a relatively small radio which covers AM, FM, LW (longwave) and 17 shortwave bands. It is different than many of the portable analog multi-band radios in that it has a sliding volume control, push-button on/off control (on the top) and a fairly large tuning knob. It doesn’t tip over easily, so it can be easily operated while standing up on a table or desk. Other features include a tuning indicator light (lights up when there is strong reception) earphone jack, DC power jack, and telescoping antenna. The sound quality and reception are good, especially on FM.

The Cougar H-116 covers a large portion of the shortwave range (more than many SW radios) in sections ranging from 3.02 to 26.01 MHz. It runs on 4 "AA" batteries. I was able to receive Voice of America, along with stations in Russia, The Netherlands and Iran. This looks to be a desirable radio for someone who desires a multi-band receiver which is of good enough quality to be used as a primary radio and at the same time be acceptable for travel, without spending an excessive amount of money. It would also be good for travelling to European countries, as the longwave band is used for some domestic broadcasts there. Unfortunately, the Cougar H116 radio seems to be difficult to find.
