Avoid Salad Dressing with Corn Syrup

With corn syrup and other sweet substances in so many foods, diabetes, obesity, and other health problems are spreading rapidly. One food item which often contains corn syrup is salad dressing; in some dressings it is the top ingredient, resulting in a high sugar content. Fortunately, you can find varieties with little or no syrup in them, which usually taste just as good and don't cost more.

Often you can avoid such salad dressing by checking the ingredients to confirm that "corn syrup" or "high fructose corn syrup" is far down the list or not listed. Even within a single brand, the sugar content can vary greatly from one variety to another. You may not be able to check ingredient lists in a restaurant or cafeteria, so here are some general guidelines:

  • Avoid darker-colored dressings like "French" and "Thousand Island"

  • Don't use salad dressing with sweet-sounding names like "Honey Dijon"

  • Choose light-colored dressings such as "Creamy Ranch" or "Caesar"
  • By following these recommendations, you will be able to cut or eliminate an unnecessary source of sugars from your diet.
