History: Computer Prices in 1992 and 1993

A lot of the basic low-end computers offered in the late '80s through around 1991 were no longer available, so the least costly machines in 1992 and '93 were substantially more expensive, though they also had much faster processors. Here are some examples of the computer prices during these years...

The 1993 edition of "The Secret Guide to Computers" indicates that an Expo Tech 386SX-25 cost $799 USD at the time, including a color monitor. A faster Gateway 486SX-33 with a monitor and two floppy drives was priced at $1,795. Prices for new Macintosh computers were generally at least $1,000 dollars.

In the 1992 Radio Shack catalog, a Tandy 286SX-10 computer was priced at $799 dollars, or $1,399 with a hard drive and color monitor. A new 386SX-16 from the same manufacturer went for $1,299 USD. Tandy's PC-compatibles generally cost less than machines offered by Apple, IBM, or Compaq, but more than most others.
